Keeping It Safe

by Brandi Cramer

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The fact that Ontario ranks number two for highway safety in North America is outstanding, but, the Ministry of Transportation hopes to reach the top spot in the world.

The paved highways so many of us use daily, weren’t always as fit as they are today.

“It was like the Wild West when I started,” says Dermott Barett, transportation enforcement officer. “Trucks have come a long way, especially in the last three or four years.”

In the Toronto district alone, each officer inspects 350 trucks a year (or 1,000 axles) ensuring safety for all road users.
