STE-THERESE, Que. – Yvan Bourgois, the head of the union representing workers at Paccar’s truck plant in Ste-Therese, Que., has gone on a hunger strike.
Bourgeois is denouncing layoffs the heavy-truck maker is imposing through sporadic closings of the plant.
Wednesday he locked himself in his office with only a supply of water.
He is arguing that the company’s employees would be better off if it reduced production and imposed a one-time layoff, with those with less seniority – instead of all employees – being let go for short periods.
The Paccar plant recently closed again on Feb. 1 and 2. n
