WINNIPEG, Man. – Manitoba has proposed creating a Trucking Productivity Improvement (TPI) Fund as part of changes to the Highway and Transportation and Highway Traffic acts.

Transportation and Government Services Minister Ron Lemieux said the fund would be dedicated to highway infrastructure improvement projects such as upgrading the load-carrying capacity, productivity and safety of highways.

“Transportation is a vital component of our provincial economy,” said Lemieux.

“We see the potential to have innovative partnerships between other levels of government and the private sector while continuing to address the specialized infrastructure needs of communities.”

Private sector investors and various levels of government would be able to contribute to the fund and see their money allocated towards specific highway infrastructure projects through agreements with the province.

The fund would also generate revenue through permit fees for overweight and over-size vehicles, contributions from private companies and governments, and fines collected for overweight truck violations.

“A funding arrangement that is more sensitive to Manitoba’s diverse road rehabilitation needs could prove beneficial to trucking companies looking to improve productivity and priority projects identified by a municipality that serve a specific industrial development or activity,” Lemieux said in a press release.
