SUDBURY, Ont. – A local doctor says there’s no question, the federal and Ontario provincial governments should each pay an equal share to four-lane Hwy. 69.
Public safety is the responsibility of both levels of government, insists Dr. Roger Labonte, a cardiologist.
“Some of us have been pushing this for years,” Labonte tells local media. In 1989, the good doctor joined a committee to four-lane the deadly route after a multiple-vehicle accident on the same road claimed the life of a local physician.
The committee, comprised of businesspeople, the former Sudbury Regional Development Corporation and the mayors of Mactier and Parry Sound, called for immediate government action to four-lane Hwy. 69 for safety and economic reasons.
Labonte has sent Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci a letter, urging he and Sudbury MP Diane Marleau to act together to accomplish the much-needed upgrades.
