Mourning the loss of a friend (December 01, 2006)

Dear Editor:

In an attempt to reach as many as the Trojan Transport Special Commodities Division boys from the ’70s as we can, it is with heavy heart that we tell of the passing of one of our own.

On Friday, Oct. 13, 2006 Jim Fiddes (Large) was found dead of a heart attack in his Hamilton apartment. Jim was originally from Sault Ste. Marie and drove for Trans Provincial Transport before his move to Hamilton. Jim cheated death more than once. He had a horrific accident in Pennsylvania a few years ago and should not have survived that. There was also one in Northern Ontario years prior to that.

He was our friend and we will not forget him. When my wife and I were married in Nova Scotia, Jim and Shirley came down so that we would have friends there from home (which was very important to me).

Shirley Fiddes even stood up for us. When we left Ontario for the East Coast they invited some friends and threw us a surprise goodbye get-together. Jim was always the first one there to lend a hand if it was needed.

Things are still in limbo at the present time. Shirley has just gone through cancer surgery, having a lung removed. A memorial service is hopefully being planned so that the rest of us can pay respects to one of our own.

We have no time noted at the present time due to Shirley’s illness. If anyone is interested in being informed of the event, please e-mail us at sbeach1@cogeco.ca and we’ll try to notify you of the service. Shirl has promised to inform us of any details

The greatest antiques are old friends.

In loving memory,

Doug and Shirley Beach
