WOODSTOCK, N.B. – Tobique-Mactaquac MP, Andy Savoy, is continuing to lobby U.S. politicians to keep remote border crossings open longer hours.

Mr. Savoy has written to U.S. Maine senators and congressmen and is requesting a meeting with Maine Senator Susan Collins to discuss alternatives to closing remote border points at night.

U.S. Customs is planning to close five crossings on the Maine-New Brunswick border at night to cut costs of around-the-clock staffing.

The changes were to be in place Mar. 15, but the move has been postponed for the time being.

“At the very minimum, I would like U.S. Customs to extend the hours its facilities are open to better accommodate the traditional social and commercial traffic patterns across our shared border,” Savoy says.

He also wants to hold joint information sessions on Canada and U.S. Customs programs and policies to strengthen security while meeting needs of citizens living on both sides of the border.
