HALIFAX, N.S. – A.W. Leil Cranes and Equipment, a Thorburn, N.S. company, has been fined under the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act for failure to maintain a motor vehicle.

In early February, the company pleaded guilty to allowing a tractor-trailer to operate with faulty brakes and failing to ensure it was safe to operate on a public highway.

The firm was fined $20,000.

It agreed also to spend $15,000 to advertise its conviction and donate $15,000 to highway safety programs.

A.W. Leil was charged after a September 1997 accident killed the truck’s 38-year-old driver, Allan MacLean.

He lost control of the tractor-trailer after its brakes failed while running down hill. n
