N.Y. tries to add convenience (August 01, 2002)

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The New York State Thruway is making the trek along its road a lot more convenient for truck drivers.

The oversize and overweight permitting system has been partially automated.

Carriers with a thruway commercial charge account can purchase permits over the Internet at any time rather than obtaining them at a toll booth en route.

The new program is called TOPS and the thruway expects to issue all permits in this fashion by 2003.

The end result will be more convenience for truck drivers, according to officials.

A driver carrying an Internet permit will need to stop at the entry booth and show the permit to the attendant, who will then enter it into the system.

TOPS can be reached online at www.thruway.state.ny.us.
