CHATHAM, Ont. – Navistar has warned it may have to lay off staff at its Canadian plant in response to an expected slowdown in 2007.

The company is blaming a pre-buy on the impending layoffs. Many fleets have been purchasing new trucks early to avoid the cost increases accompanying 2007 trucks. Manufacturers, including International, have suggested new trucks will cost $7,500-$10,000 more in 2007 because of new technology required to meet stringent emissions standards. Layoffs could come as soon as 16 weeks, Navistar reported. The company provided early notice in accordance with the Ontario Employment Standards Act.
