New H-o-S regs approved
WINNIPEG, Man. – Canada’s federal and provincial transportation ministers approved the latest Hours-of-Service proposal in Winnipeg Sept. 20.
Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) chief executive officer, David Bradley, was in Winnipeg urging the ministers to approve the new regulations and he was delighted with their decision.
“The ministers are to be commended for doing the right thing. Federal Transport Minister David Collenette, his provincial counterparts and the officials, deserve credit for shepherding the proposals through to this stage when at times the slugging was very tough and the political rewards were uncertain,” says Bradley.
The new rules include revised daily and weekly work limits while increasing the daily minimum rest periods.
Under the new regulations, the maximum driving time will be reduced from 16 to 13 hours a day.
It will also no longer be possible to put in a 104 hour work week, which is possible under the current regulations.
The new H-o-S rules were developed over a 10-year period and had the support of Teamsters and the CTA.
