NTA doesn’t represent me

Dear Editor,

Who is the National Truckers Association? Is this the group of people trying to have owner/operators classed as “employees”? If it is, they certainly do not represent me or anyone I know in the industry.

This NTA seems to be reacting like a child with a temper tantrum, demanding that someone take responsibility for their business.

Apathy has always been the bane of truckers. They whine when things are tough and demand immediate action. However, when things are running smoothly, they want nothing to do with any associations or groups who want to get together to develop solutions to situations such as high fuel prices.

This problem didn’t occur overnight. The fuel cartels have been playing the game of three steps forward and two steps back for more than 20 years. Sure, they may drop the price of fuel, but you’ll never see it go back to the levels of two years ago — at least not through blockades and protests.

The best way to beat them is to stop using their credit cards because it’s convenient.

Truckers in general (except the Owner/Operator Independent Drivers Association) are apathetic when it comes to looking after their businesses, but are quick to stamp their feet when things go sour.

The blockade route has been taken. The NTA members should have come together long before now and placed proposals and solutions in place to get results.

Educating the O/Os on ways to run their business (Truck News has been publishing informative articles) is the best way to combat business problems.

Some of the statements I have read would make me think that those speaking on behalf of the NTA got into the business with their eyes closed.

The drawback to being in business for yourself is the risk. We give up the safety of unions and unemployment insurance for the perks that can be available.

If they want to be treated as employees, they should get a job and join a union.
