Reader of the Month: Lloyd Edwards

“Hi! My name is Lloyd Edwards and I drive for Richard’s Heavy Haul out of Regina, Sask.

I’m usually hauling heavy equipment about 15 per cent of the time in Canada and the rest in the U.S. though I’ve been driving coast-to-coast for more than 35 years.

I make my home in Lethbridge, Alta. Along with my cat, Missy (who thinks she’s a dog).

When I’m not on the road, I enjoy billiards, playing around on the computer and reading.

I’ve also been involved with the Trucker Buddy International pen-pal program where I wrote to the same class for about 12 years.

I have an advisor position with the Owner-Operators’ Business Association of Canada and am one of the proud Canadian members of Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

I usually pick up Truck News whenever I see one at the truck stops.

Some of the research Truck News does into the new federal laws is good, but some avenues could stand to be a little more in-depth and refined; without proper research, you have nothing.

I like to see columns where the writer’s not just spewing what readers want to hear, but what they need to hear.

If you’re going to write something, you want to have it to reflect on the industry, not just what advertisers would like you to say.

In the industry overall, I’m concerned about the possibility of Bill 169 going through as well as the driver shortage.

However, with the driver shortage, it’s important to note there’s not just a shortage of experienced drivers, but also of experienced companies on the roads.

There are too many accidents due to inexperience and I just wonder how much the industry is willing to sacrifice before they make a change.”
