Reader of the Month: Rod Perrault

“Hi! My name is Rod Perrault and I’m a driver with TST Truckload in Mississauga, Ont. I’ve been a truck driver for roughly 30 years now.

When I’m not driving, I like to be around my house in Hamilton, Ont. I like to spend time with my grandchildren and I also love doing gardening – I have a bit of a green thumb.

I’m not into using computers very much. I come from the old way of doing things – I have a granddaughter who shows me how to switch it on and off.

Being on the highway all the time, I don’t get a whole lot of time for hobbies and things like that. Often times I’m on the road six days a week and on the seventh day, I try to get out to church though that doesn’t always work out. My biggest hobby is home time with my wife.

When I’m reading Truck News, if I find a topic that’s interesting, I usually like to follow up on it as best I can. I like reading articles about politics and what Prime Minister Stephen Harper is up to – basically anything that shows that there is life outside of driving a truck. I also enjoy reading human interest stories and things of that nature.

With regards to the industry itself, I’ve got a beef with this so-called “democracy” we’re living in, where they tell us when to eat, sleep and how to run our trucks. It’s more of a dictatorship now. Years ago it didn’t use to be this way. But I know it’s not a perfect world – if it were, I wouldn’t be standing here right now.

Major companies and corporations are eventually going to have to just sit down and figure out how to fix the industry.”
