Russia Wants Trade Link With Northern Port

WINNIPEG, Man. – Russia’s Ambassador to Canada recently visited Manitoba where he discussed developing a trade link between the Port of Churchill and his country.

Georgiy Mamedov will visit the northern port this weekend for a series of cultural events and meetings. He met with Manitoba Premier Gary Doer in Winnipeg last month.

The Port of Churchill is the closest port to Russia geographically in North America.

The latest meetings are a follow-up to a letter of intent signed in 2002.

The letter suggested Manitoba and Murmansk develop a marine link.

Premier Gary Doer pointed out recent dredging of the Churchill port now allows for bigger ships and one of the top priorities of the Churchill Gateway Development Corporation is to create an Arctic link.
