LONGS CREEK, N.B. – Final funding has been announced for twinning the section of the Trans-Canada Highway known as “Suicide Alley.”

New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord and Prime Minister Jean Chretien say the $400 million for the five-year project will be equally split between both New Brunswick and Ottawa. They add the needed roadwork will result in a safer 520-km connection between Fredericton and the Quebec border. There have been a number of fatalities and injuries on the two-lane stretch of highway in the last five years and with the upgrade that number is expected to drop dramatically.

However, some New Brunswick business owners say that although it will be a much-needed improvement to their roadways, it may promote the demise of their livelihoods.

Businesses that cater to traffic running along the current highway between the provincial border and Longs Creek will be displaced and some owners expect to close before the completion of the highway in 2007.
