Saint John, N.B. declares war on highway noise
SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The City of Saint John, N.B. is declaring a war on noise pollution, and says highways are a huge part of the problem.
The city’s environment committee has outlined a policy document advising ways to soften noise from the city’s airport and highways.
Among the environment committee’s suggestions include planting trees as sound barriers adjacent to roadways.
It also would like the city to enact bylaws that would require new industrial developments meet a zero-noise requirement.
The committee told city council that it should consult with airport and federal authorities regarding acceptable noise levels, especially in connection with new housing developments.
For the time being, Saint John’s city council is not ready to act on any of the recommendations.
Among the sticking points is enforcement: No plans have been mapped for how to back up the rules. n
