Scoring with SmartWay

The EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership has four categories of fuel efficiency/environmental performance scores. Higher scores could make carriers and logistics companies more attractive to a prospective Freight Shipper Partner since the shipper’s SmartWay score is a weighted average of its carriers’ scores.

A score of 1.25 represents outstanding environmental performance, and means that these partners are already utilizing most of the commercially available fuel saving strategies and are actively evaluating the latest emerging technologies.

A score of 1.00 represents very good environmental performance and is above the industry standard.

A score of 0.75, the most common Partner score, represents good environmental performance.

The meaning of a score of 0.00 would indicate that the partner is behind schedule in submitting required materials, said the EPA.

Partners can improve their scores by adopting various fuel efficiency

and emission control technologies, policies, and strategies for their fleets. Continuous commitment to improving environmental performance, no matter what their starting score, is essential to the partnership.
