Surcharge Raised to Cover Fuel Costs -Shipper Perceptions

In their most recent quarterly reports, executives from some of North America’s largest motor carriers lamented that their fuel surcharges are no longer covering the true cost of diesel for their operations. However, they may find securing higher fuel surcharges a tough challenge. Not only because of the competitive atmosphere caused by shrinking freight volumes, but also because there is indication shippers are pushing back. A recently published eyefortransport survey found that 42% of transportation buyers don’t believe fuel surcharges are covering just the cost of fuel. The same survey found that six in 10 transportation buyers consider selecting more fuel efficient modes a very important strategic option to counterbalance the rising cost of fuel.
