Take it easy passing ploughs

ST. JOHN’S Nfld. – The RCMP and Newfoundland’s Department of Works, Services and Transportation are advising truckers to use caution when passing ploughs on the right.

The Rock’s record snowfall this winter – including a half-dozen storms in ten days for St. John’s – have resulted in a number of accidents in connection with road-clearing operations. One tractor-trailer on the western part of the island went off the Trans-Canada Highway while trying to pass a plough.

The RCMP cautions that a lane is 12 feet wide, but a plough’s wing blade reaches out an additional three feet on the right. n
