Employment is another key indicator of a mode’s importance within the transportation industry. Almost 828,000 full-time employees work in transportation, accounting for 6.9 per cent of total full-time employment in Canada. Trucking is the most important employer in the transportation sector, accounting for 36.5 per cent of all positions. That’s more than twice the size of the next largest employer, air transportation, with an estimated 14.2 per cent of all transport jobs. The workforce for Canadian carriers earning at least $1 million in annual revenues grew by 0.8 per cent in 1998, the last year for which complete numbers are available. On a provincial basis, Ontario leads the pack in employment growth with 2.6 per cent growth.
