TORONTO, Ont. – John Thompson, president of John Thompson Motor Sports, is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Trailmobile Service to Industry Award.

Thompson has served on the Ontario Trucking Association Board of Directors since 1973, a long way from where his life in trucking began as a driver with Allied Van Lines in 1960.

He became manager of Allied’s Owen Sound office in 1964 and formed his own company, John Thompson Moving & Storage Ltd. in 1967, which became affiliated with United Van Lines shortly thereafter.

Thompson started the company with one small moving van and grew the business to approximately 80 vehicles and 100 employees with offices in London, Ont., Wingham and Toronto by the time he retired in 1990.

In 1994, Thompson went back to work as a driver for Churchill Transportation, where he currently works. He also keeps himself busy driving the cars of retirees to their winter homes in places like Florida.

A long-time member of the local Rotary Club as well as the Owen Sound Jaycees, Thompson has also been involved in auto racing, the junior lacrosse league and minor hockey. n
