Toronto ponders one-day vehicle ban

TORONTO, Ont. – The City of Toronto is considering banning vehicles for an entire day, in its efforts to reduce smog.

“Sure, we should try it for a day,” says Betty Disero, chairwoman of Toronto’s works committee, adding, “we have to figure out what day and how it can be done.”

Her staff is currently putting together a full report on the idea, which may start off with Yonge St. being closed to traffic for 24 hours.

As far fetched as the idea may sound, several European cities, as well as a few in Latin America, have adopted a car-free day. n
