TransLink Kills RAV Transit Line

LANGLEY, B.C. – The B.C. Trucking Association is lauding a decision by TransLink to abandon plans to build a costly Rapid Airport-Vancouver (RAV) transit line.

The RAV line was part of TransLink’s recently published three-year plan, but the BCTA publicly criticized the plan, which would have cost between $1.5 and $1.7 billion. It was expected the RAV line would also require $100 million per year in subsidies. There were also concerns the line would not achieve ridership projections of 100,000 per day so traffic would not be greatly alleviated.

“As a representative of a major taxpayer group in this province whose members are located throughout B.C., BCTA was concerned that far too much public money would be spent on a project that would not provide the magnitude of benefits that one would expect from an estimated $1.5 to 1.7 billion investment,” the association recently said in a newsletter. The BCTA also expressed concerns that the investment would drain provincial coffers and limit the province’s future ability to make infrastructure improvements that would benefit road users.
