SURREY, B.C. – The public will soon have a chance to voice its suggestions and concerns about a proposed $600-million Fraser River crossing.

TransLink says meetings will be held in Surrey, Langley, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, although dates have yet to be determined. The options up for discussion include: a bridge connecting Maple Meadows Way to 200 St. in Langley; a tunnel to Barnston Island with a bridge to 192 St.; or a bridge with a connection to 192 St.

“The idea is to get input on these options to help us make a decision,” project director, Fred Cummings, tells local media. “We will be presenting all the information we have been gathering.”

He adds the consultations will come in mid-February at the latest and that local mailings and questionnaires will also be used to gauge public opinion. Further public consultations will be held in March with construction expected to begin in 2006 or 2007.

TransLink has said the crossing will cost more than $600 million, with the cost to be recouped through tolls that will generate about $80 million per year. It’s expected crossing the bridge will carry a charge of $1 to $3, depending on the time of day.
