Truck News is pleased to announce the promotion of Lou Smyrlis to editorial director. In his new position, Lou will be responsible for the editorial focus and direction of both Truck News and Truck West. His duties will include heading up a team of journalists across the country, ensuring that it produces the top quality editorial Truck News/West readers have come to expect.
Lou also will initiate a number of new projects that will help maintain Truck News/West’s number one position in the marketplace and he will continue to maintain and forge new relationships with Truck News/West’s extensive client base.
With his newest appointment, Lou, who has 14 years experience reporting on the industry, will now head an expanded transportation group of magazines that includes Truck News, Truck West, Motortruck, Canadian Transportation & Logistics, an annual Buyer’s Guide, the Marketing Manager’s Guide to the Canadian Trucking Industry, and electronic products comprising two Web sites, two daily news feeds and two weekly e-newsletters.
Combined these properties have a circulation of more than 140,000 across Canada and provide industry-leading access to both providers and buyers of transportation services.
The expansion also creates an editorial team that includes five editors, including an editorial office in Calgary, 10 contributing editors and 10 columnists to form the largest transportation group in the Canadian transportation media.
In an effort to deepen our relationship with you we wanted to take this opportunity to present a detailed background of Lou and the many positive qualities he brings to Truck News and the transportation group of magazines.
Many of you will already be familiar with Lou through his many years as editor of Motortruck and Canadian Transportation & Logistics as well as the Marketing Manager’s Guide to the Canadian Trucking Industry, the most comprehensive annual statistical analysis of our market available.
Since beginning his journalism career in 1986, Lou’s work has been recognized with numerous Canadian Press awards for excellence in investigative reporting, commentary, profile writing, news writing, and technical writing. He is a judge for the annual Maintenance Manager of the Year Award, and presenter of the Distribution Executive of the Year Award.
He is also the architect of ground breaking research including the Motor Carrier Fleet and Owner/Operator Buying Intentions Survey, the Motor Carrier Technology Benchmarking Survey, the Shipper Transportation Buying Trends Survey, the Survey of the Canadian Logistics Professional, and the Shipper’s Choice Awards, which provided the first scientifically derived benchmarks for carrier performance across all transportation modes. Lou is also a frequent speaker on industry issues and statistical trends and his work has been referenced in Statistics Canada and Transport Canada publications.
Holding an honors degree in journalism and a certificate in public relations, he has also been awarded a professional designation (MCILT) from the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in North America for his years of experience in the transportation industry. Lou began his career writing on business and political issues for two major Ontario daily newspapers before joining Motortruck in 1989.
Apart from his responsibilities with the Transportation Group of Magazines, Lou is a member of the advisory board for Loyalist College’s journalism program, a supervisor of Humber College’s journalism co-op program, and Chair of the Harvey Southam Editorial Career Award selection committee, which recognizes lifetime achievement in the field of magazine journalism. He has also spearheaded the magazine review process within our company with the mandate to improve the quality of both editorial content and design of all our properties. Please join us in welcoming Lou to this challenging new position. We are confident he and his team will set a new standard for editorial excellence in the years to come.
