Trucker gets six months for Oscar theft

LOS ANGELES, Ca. – A Roadway Express driver accused of stealing 55 Oscars prior to this year’s Academy Awards ceremony has pleaded no contest to a charge of grand theft and been sentenced to six months in jail.

Lawrence Ledent will also be on probation for five years and have to pay US$50,000 to Roadway, which fired him after the statuettes disappeared in early March. The Ohio-based carrier paid that amount to Willie Fulgear, who recovered all but three of the balding, gold-plated men in a trash bin a week before the March 26 ceremonies. The 38-year-old trucker will also have to pay $350 for each of the missing statuettes. Ledent is out on bail but will begin serving his sentence on Aug. 8. n
