Trucks an unfair target

Dear Editor,

Re: Trucking unfairly targeted (TN, April 2000)

Dave Holleman’s column questioning 24-hour truck scales makes sense. This is a politically motivated action to gain votes and popularity. Unsafe cars have killed far more people yet they are virtually ignored.

Traffic statistics clearly show that less than one per cent of all traffic fatalities is caused by unsafe trucks. Yet it’s trucking that faces many arbitrary laws, bans and medicals. 24-hour weigh scales and inspections will never be more than a harassing scheme to generate revenue and votes.
