GREENSBORO, N.C. – Volvo Trucks North America is getting an early jump on the next round of emissions standards, and has already delivered its first EPA2010 field test trucks.

Five trucks, equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), were delivered to Talon Logistics Sept. 13. The company operates as a distribution company for Pittsburgh, Pa.-based food retailer, Giant Eagle.

Each of the test trucks is a Volvo VN daycab.

“This is a milestone in achieving cleaner air, while delivering the fuel economy, reliability and performance our customers demand,” said Peter Karlsten, president and CEO of Volvo Trucks North America. “We know from Volvo’s experience in other markets that SCR is the best technology for producing very low NOx emissions, plus excellent fuel economy.”

Volvo’s EPA2010 trucks will feature exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) combined with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and SCR. SCR is already widely used in Europe, where more than 100,000 Volvo trucks with SCR are currently in operation.

Volvo Trucks North America says it will increase its field test fleet to 11 trucks this year, with additional trucks entering service in 2008.

SCR requires extra components such as a urea tank and injector.

A small amount of urea is dosed into the exhaust stream, reducing NOx emissions and releasing harmless water and nitrogen.
