We need more full-service truck stops

Dear Editor:

I wanted to send you a short e-mail to say how much I have enjoyed reading your pieces in Truck West, which I read whenever a load takes me to Canada. As it happens, that has been twice within the last couple of weeks.

I am a Senior Driver Mentor with 19,000-truck strong Swift Transportation Co. of Phoeniz, AZ. I am based with our “Mile-High Fleet” in Denver, CO, and live in the great state of Kansas. I drive throughout 48 states and Canada. I like Western Canada very much – it’s a good place to train my students for transborder load work.

I like Canada loads except for one thing: an astonishing lack of complete-service truck stop plazas with plenty of big-rig parking (200+ spaces plus) that are located on clean, well-maintained surfaces. I like patronizing the Calgary truck stops since both make an earnest attempt to keep their lots clean and well-maintained.

I believe a planned Flying J truck stop will do much to intensify competition and the level of services offered. n
