B.C. trucker faces impaired driving charges after hitting parked vehicles in Port Coquitlam

Police in British Columbia are recommending criminal charges of impaired driving against a truck driver after a tractor-trailer he was operating hit four parked vehicles in Port Coquitlam.

The Dec. 9 incident began just before 3 p.m., when B.C. Highway Patrol received a report of a tractor-trailer driving erratically on the Mary Hill Bypass. Before police arrived, the truck hit four parked vehicles on Industrial Avenue, according to an RCMP news release.

“B.C. Highway Patrol stopped and identified the driver thanks to an alert citizen who called police,” Corporal Michael McLaughlin with the B.C. Highway Patrol said in the release. “It is unbelievable that a professional driver would consider operating a vehicle of this size while impaired, and that’s why B.C. Highway Patrol is recommending criminal charges.”

The 42-year-old Surrey man who was driving will not be named until his first court appearance in Port Coquitlam on March 12, 2025.

He is facing charges that include impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol level over 80 mg/100 ml. He also faces a 90-day administrative driving prohibition, and his B.C. driver’s license has been seized. The tractor-trailer was impounded for 24 hours.
