Alcoa introduces lighter wheels, wheel covers

by Today's Trucking

Alcoa has taken more weight out of its aluminum wheels. The new Alcoa 22.5”x8.25” ULT36x and 22.5”x14” 84U61x and 84U64x are each 3 lb. lighter than previous designs. The ULT36x weighs just 36 lb., while the wide-base offering weighs in at 49 lb.

The lighter-weight wheels were revealed at the Technology & Maintenance Council meetings. Alcoa claims these are the world’s lightest-weight commercial truck wheels, providing fuel savings of up to 0.9 gallons per 1,000 miles traveled when converting from steel. They can be ordered in a Dura-Bright or Dura-Black surface treatment, and with two valve stem openings.

Also new at the show were Alcoa’s wheel covers, for steer and drive positions. The covers provide fuel savings of up to 0.35 gallons per 1,000 miles traveled, Alcoa claims, and come with a two-year warranty. They can be applied to 22.5”x8.25” and 22.5”x14” wheels. The covers feature a 9” inspection opening so drivers can access wheel-end components during pre-trips.
