Carrier’s new Vector TRUs more environmentally friendly

by Today's Trucking

Carrier Transicold is now offering two premium performance versions of its Vector trailer refrigeration units (TRUs) to reduce emissions while delivering “ultra-high” efficiencies.

“The new Vector 8700 single-temperature unit and Vector 8800MT multi-temperature unit build upon the legacy of E-Drive, the all-electric refrigeration technology pioneered and refined by Carrier Transicold, and used by thousands of fleets worldwide,” said Bill Maddox, senior manager of product management, Truck Trailer Americas, Carrier Transicold. “These premium performance units reduce particulate emissions by 96% while adding significant gains in fuel efficiency compared to standard Vector models.”

The new models are lifetime-compliant with California Air Resources Board (CARB) TRU rules, the company says. They also contain a new engine with common rail fuel injection for improved fuel delivery, reducing fuel consumption by 5-10%. A new third speed, dubbed “eco speed,” decreases engine RPMs when conditions permit for further fuel savings.

The units use more environmentally friendly R-452A refrigerant than the previous R-404A formula.

Built-in electric standby maintains trailer temperatures better than competitive systems that lose up to 26% of their rated capacity when using standby power, Carrier Transicold claims.

And maintenance is simplified since the diesel engine is direct-coupled to a high-output generator that produces power for the all-electric refrigeration system, eliminating many parts.

The new TRUs come with Carrier Transicold’s Lynx Fleet telematics platform.
