Deadline nears for non-TAC trailers

EDMONTON, Alta. — Carriers that are still using non-TAC approved trailers with a wheelbase of less than 6.25 metres will require a permit to continue using these trailers in Alberta after Aug. 1.

An exemption permit is available from Alberta Transportation, which will extend the sunset date long enough to provide time to modify the equipment or allow carriers to fulfill contractual obligations. To enquire about a permit, call Alberta Transportation at 403-340-5189.

Meanwhile, in B.C. the sunset date is Dec. 31, 2004. The B.C. Trucking Association is asking carriers for information to determine how many non-TAC trailers are still on the road and the approximate cost of retrofitting or replacing the equipment.
