Endurant XD and XD Pro transmissions for heavy weights, demanding terrain

Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies has unveiled the spec’s for its Endurant XD and XD Pro automated transmissions, supporting on-highway applications with high gross combined weight ratings and severe-duty on/off highway applications.

The Endurant XD is for on-highway applications such as doubles and triples, and severe applications like dump and logging trucks. It’s rated for engines delivering 1,650 to 1,850 lb-ft of torque, and for on-highway applications with gross combined weight ratings up to 166,000 lb.

Its counterpart, the Endurant XD Pro for severe service, has an unlimited gross combined weight rating. It can be configured with up to six reverse gears and paired with engines like the Cummins X15 with torque ratings of 1,650 – 2,050 lb-ft.

Endurant XD features include a twin-countershaft design with helical gearing and large bearings for high engine torques. A new 18D ratio set with an overall ratio of 20.5:1 features small even steps for smooth shifts and performance, the company says. And the transmission is 225 lb. lighter than comparable UltraShift Plus models.

An input shaft driven power takeoff (PTO) system delivers power to an eight-bolt bottom mount and four-bolt rear mount that can also operate independently of the transmission gear. The four-bolt rear mount features an external pressurized lube port and large center distance, delivering an option when there’s no room for a bottom-mounted PTO, the company adds. The total PTO capacity is 160 hp or 610 lb-ft of torque.

The transmission’s precision lubrication system promises to better the fuel economy of an UltraShift Plus by up to 2%. Smart features like sensors that monitor internal oil temperature and fluid pressure help to protect against damage.

Trucks running below 110,000 lb. won’t need a transmission cooler, while maintenance intervals last about 800,000 km.

New “performance goals”, meanwhile, use software to combine transmission shift points and clutch calibrations.

Endurant XD Pro models use Eaton’s extreme-duty clutches. Related software includes a rock-free mode that lets drivers use an accelerator to rock a vehicle free. Its off-highway performance goal is calibrated for natural rolling terrain and soft soil.
