Exxon’s EXTRA EPA-compliant oil

Exxon XD-3 EXTRA heavy-duty engine oil has been reformulated to surpass the upcoming American Petroleum Institute’s (API) CI-4 performance specifications.

Exxon XD-3 EXTRA, which is compatible with current and previous diesel engine technologies requiring API CH-4, CG-4 or CF-4 engine oils, is ready now for the new API CI-4 licensing, which will begin September 5, 2002, shortly before the Environmental Protection Agency’s October 2002 deadline for mandatory production of heavy duty diesel engines that emit lower nitrogen oxide levels without increasing particulate matter, hydrocarbons, or carbon monoxide emissions.

“The CI-4 ready Exxon XD-3 EXTRA provides outstanding performance and engine protection in
conventional engines and in new EGR equipped engines that run hotter, creating higher soot and
acid levels than in previous engine designs,” said Michael Ragomo, Commercial Vehicle Lubricants
Product Advisor at ExxonMobil Oil Corporation.

To achieve CI-4 approval, engine oil must be evaluated against a number of demanding tests to
meet stringent performance standards for new low emissions EGR equipped engines. CI-4 tests involving the Mack T -10, showed reduced oil loss and outstanding oil consumption control, which significantly reduces the need for make-up oil,” said Ragomo.

Other benefits include: Stands up to the intense heat of EGR-equipped engines to minimize oil loss while operating at high temperatures; stronger TBN retention to neutralize more acids for improved protection; excellent soot dispersancy, meaning reduced piston deposits, less oil thickening, and better anti-wear protection; and longer drain and overhaul intervals.

Exxon distributors, truck stops, and other outlets will offer XD-3 EXTRA beginning in March 2002.
