F-650/F-750 Get New Diesel

Ford will offer a new 6.7L Powerstroke V-8 diesel with its the 2017 F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks that, it says, can travel 500,000 miles (a whopping 804,000 km) without a major service visit.

About 90% of the trucks fitted with the engine should reach the mileage milestone without service that involves removing cylinder heads or dropping the oil pan to reach internal components. Ford pairs the engine with its TorqShift HD 6-speed automatic transmission.

Ford used dynamometer testing to show that its B10 engine design could reach 500,000 miles, and found that only 10% of trucks tested would require major service.

The new engine is also claimed to be 25% quieter at 100 km/h and up to 45% quieter at idle inside the cabin. At the front of the grille, the truck is 35% quieter, Ford says.

The V-8 diesel is offered in three power ratings, including 270 hp and 675 lb ft of torque, 300/700 and 330/725. The B10 rating is based on the 330-hp version.

Ford has also increased towing and payload capability for its 2017 Super Duty F-350, F-450, and F-550 chassis cabs with new frames and the same 6.7L diesel.

The 2017 chassis cabs also get a new frame consisting of 95% high-strength steel and eight times more torsional rigidity than the previous frame with through-welded crossmembers and fully boxed rails under the cab and forward.

The improvement results in a 40,000-lb gross combined weight rating (GCWR) and a 500-lb increase in front gross axle weight rating to 7500 lb to support bigger snowplows, taller utility buckets and cranes, as well as larger ambulance bodies or other specialized vocational body upfits.
