PORTLAND, Ore. — Freightliner LLC, the company that makes Freightliner trucks, will sell the Unimog, a SUV-like truck for heavy-duty applications.

The Unimog is targeted at the vocational markets, like utilities and municipal services and fire and rescue services. Built by Mercedes-Benz for more than fifty years, the Unimog is designed for applications equivalent to the U.S. military’s HUMV, better known as the hummer.

Freightliner emphasizes that the Unimog “is not intended to compete in the mass sport-utility vehicle markets. It is a Class 6 commercial truck intended for service applications where terrain or weather require a high-mobility vehicle.”

It will be sold by Freightliner Trucks and American LaFrance brands. It will be built in Germany with imports into the U.S. beginning in 2002.
