Greater Vancouver gets first biodiesel pump

VANCOUVER, (June 22, 2005) — The left coast got its first major biodiesel refueling station this week.

UPPI — a leader in B.C.’s petroleum industry — has teamed up with West Coast Reduction in supplying retail biodiesel in the Burnaby, B.C. area. The fuel will be provided by United Petroleum Products.

The public will be able to purchase B5 (95% petroleum diesel blended with 5% biodiesel) at “market diesel prices” from UPPI’s cardlock facility at 3373 Norland Avenue. The official grand opening will take place July 8.

British Columbia showed its commitment to biodiesel in Budget 2004 when they announced preferential treatment for alternative motor fuels (AMF) that included biodiesel when blended with clear diesel fuel. As a result, the biodiesel portion of the blend of biodiesel and diesel is exempt from road tax.

“We commend UPPI for its commitment to offering a B5 blend” stated Christine Paquette, the BAC’s Executive Director. “This move shows Canadians and governments that industry and BAC members are committed to helping the biodiesel industry grow in Canada.”

Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. It is said to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lowers hydrocarbons and particulate matter. At a B5 blend, biodiesel can be used in most diesel engines with little or no modifications.
