HOLLAND, Mich. SAF-Holland has introduced what its calling the worlds lightest fifth wheel.
The Holland FWAL Lightweight Aluminum Fifth Wheel has been designed by SAF-Holland and forged by Alcoa. It is designed for standard duty applications and forged from the same material Alcoa uses for its truck wheels. Holland officials say the new fifth wheel weighs in at 100 lbs less than competitive models.
The new fifth wheel is rated for 55,000 lbs maximum vertical load and 150,000 lbs maximum drawbar pull. The company is backing it with a five-year, 500,000 mile guarantee.
Company officials will market the new fifth wheel to weight-conscious fleets that use aluminum components to increase payload. The fifth wheel will compliment other commonly used aluminum components such as fuel tanks, wheels, frame rails, mounting angles and bell housings, the company announced.
A gasoline hauler, for example, will exceed the maximum weight limit before reaching the volume capacity of the tanker. A 100 lb savings on the fifth wheel, can mean 100 pounds – or 16 gallons – more gasoline on every haul. For a fuel delivery tanker running 24/7, those additional gallons of profit can add up quickly, pointed out Mike Ginocchio, fifth wheel product manager with Holland.
The company said the lightweight fifth wheel has been field-tested with tanker fleets, bulk haulers and flatdeck carriers hauling a variety of loads. The new offering also features Hollands NoLube technology that eliminates the need to grease the top of the plate, between the top plate and bracket and in the lock mechanism, the company said.
