The Isuzu ReachXL Hybrids was to introduce its first diesel-powered hybrid electric powertrain at the Work Truck Show in Indianapolis today. The company’s XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System is now available on the Reach commercial van from Isuzu and Utilimaster. As the first diesel-powered vehicle with the XL3 powertrain, the Reach will appeal to delivery service companies as well as public sector and corporate fleets looking to reduce fuel consumption and meet sustainability goals.

XL Hybrids says its customers can see immediate savings with a 25% increase in fuel economy in addition to a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

The technology has a quick adoption rate for fleets since there’s no need for special plugs, charging, or fueling infrastructure.

The simple XL3 drive system saves fuel through regenerative braking.

Compatible with new and existing class 2 to 4 commercial fleet vehicles, the XL3 system can be installed in less than six hours. It works seamlessly in the background with zero impact on fleet operations or service, and no driver training or infrastructure requirements.

Special financing options are available to XL Hybrids’ customers to retrofit current fleet vehicles and pay for the hybrid system over time. Customers can also refinance their existing vehicles or order new vans and buses with the XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System.

The system is immediately available on the Reach van with 2500-lb payload capacity with the XL3 system installed. The Reach van is a high-roof class 3 delivery van that comes with a standard 151.4-in. wheelbase and the 3.0-liter, 150-hp Isuzu DOHC 4-cylinder diesel engine.

That powertrain is mated to a Utilimaster body that uses impact-resistant, lightweight, molded body panels. The structural components are a hybrid of aluminum and highly engineered polycarbonate sandwich panels, and the end result is said to be a corrosion-resistant body that’s lighter than walk-in vans of equivalent lengths.

XL Hybrids was recognized as one of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company in 2014
