Mad drivers returning Alberta licence plates

OKOTOKS, Alta. — Alberta drivers with the letters "BSE" on their licence plates have been given the opportunity to exchange their plates free of charge.

About 1,000 licence plates beginning with the letters "BSE" were shipped out to registries across the province, angering some of the unfortunate recipients.

Okotoks resident, Nora Mulder, told the Calgary Herald she was appalled when she noticed her new licence plates contained the three dreaded letters.

“We weren’t going to drive around with those letters on our truck,” she said. “Millions of dollars have been lost because of mad cow. I thought it was crazy to get a plate like that here. We’re proud supporters of Alberta’s cattle industry, and there was no way a rancher was going to see that on our vehicle.”

Meanwhile, Kyle Manske of Okotoks felt the same way after being issued a similar plate.

“I didn’t even really look at it,” Manske told the Herald. “Then it dawned on me, and I was kind of amazed that something like that would get through the system without someone noticing it.”

An Alberta government spokesman told the Herald the plates were likely made before the Mad Cow crisis hit Alberta.
