TORONTO — Ontario is widening a six-kilometre stretch of Highway 401 near Kingston and making other upgrades to infrastructure in the area to improve road safety and traffic conditions.
 

In addition to widening the highway from four to six lanes from west of Sydenham Road to west of Montreal Street, the province has committed to other improvements, including adding a median barrier, traffic signals and lighting at County Road 38 and McIvor Road, reconstructing the Sydenham Road interchange ramps, as well as repairing the Sir John A Macdonald boulevard overpass bridge and Sydenham Road underpass.  The Division Street and Montreal Street interchange ramps and landscaping will also be rebuilt.

The $50-million construction project is currently underway and is expected to be completed by summer 2012. During construction, the six-kilometre stretch being expanded will be reduced to two lanes of traffic, and single lane closures may be required at night. Signs will be posted to notify drivers of closures.
