FREDERICTON, N.B. — A new type of wide tires that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by transport trucks can now operate on certain New Brunswick highways under special permit.

New generation single-wide tires are designed to benefit the environment by reducing rolling resistance and saving on fuel. The tires can also support heavier axle loads than the standard single tires without damage to the pavement, officials say.

“These new generation single tires will both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase industry productivity,” Minister Landry said. “This represents a practical way for us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector and to work towards achieving our goal of self-sufficiency by 2026.”

The new tires must have a minimum width of 445 mm. Axles equipped with the new generation tires will be allowed a maximum weight of 7,700 kg. The special permits will be valid for highways with a gross vehicle weight rating of 56,500 kg or 62,500 kg. Allowable weights on all other roads will be 6160 kg per axle. As well, axles equipped with the standard single tires will continue to be allowed a maximum weight of 6,000 kg.

The fee for this new permit will be $50 and will be valid for one year. Permits are available by contacting the special permit office at 506-453-2982.
