No oversized loads on Hwy. 63

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Hwy. 63 into Fort McMurray was re-opened yesterday, but a 70,000 hectare forest fire is still out of control and more highway closures are possible.

Trucks carrying oversized loads to and from the oilsands are not being permitted on the highway in case the road is once again closed. Alberta Transportation officials say the oversized loads are too difficult to turn around in case of an emergency.

Commercial trucks, however, are able to travel secondary road 881, about 130 kilometres of which is gravel. RCMP estimate taking 881 will add about two hours to the trip to the oilsands. The speed limit on the road is 80 km-h.

Firefighters are hoping rain will help get the fire under control later today. For the latest updates, call 780-799-8000.
