Orbcomm releases ‘smart’ two-way dashcam

by Today's Trucking

Orbcomm is now offering service fleets the option of smart road- and driver-facing high-definition dashcams that feature night vision.

The FM 6510 is well suited for fleets involved in home deliveries, oil and gas delivery, construction and commercial maintenance, the company says. The cameras use AI and sensors to help fleets detect unsafe driving behaviors including speeding, cellphone use and distracted driving, as well as tailgating, stop sign violations, and harsh events.

Voice coaching addresses those behaviors and reports are generated along with video examples for safety managers. There are also mechanisms to reward top-performing drivers.

Customizable alerts let fleets respond to incidents as they see fit, and to reconstruct accidents.

“Safety is a top priority for every fleet, whether they have 50 or 5,000 vehicles, and integrating Orbcomm’s smart dashcam is a great way to promote a safety-first culture and extend a fleet’s visibility of events happening on the road and in the cab in real-time,” said Gregg Plonisch, Orbcomm’s senior vice-president of product management.

“By leveraging our telematics-enabled video solution, service fleets can keep their drivers, vehicles and reputation safe, reduce risk in their operations and optimize fuel efficiency and maintenance costs, all of which deliver a strong, long-term ROI.”

  • And what about the driver’s privacy? That cab is his office and home! Outwardly facing cameras are fine, but inward looking cameras should definitely be illegal. A driver should be entitled to some personal privacy.
