Sea to Sky Highway upgrades to keep construction trucks busy

VANCOUVER, B.C. — With $600 million in upgrades expected to take place on the Sea to Sky Highway, local construction fleets will be kept busy.

The Vancouver Sun is reporting that enough rock will be excavated for the upgrades to fill 307,000 dump trucks. Those trucks would stretch from Vancouver to Whitehorse if lined up bumper to bumper.

In all, engineers expect 2.3 million cubic metres of rock to be removed from the corridor during the upgrades. That rock, for the most part, will be trucked out of the corridor and transported to nearby barges. However, engineers will crush some of it down and re-use it as gravel.

Meanwhile, it’s expected more than 533,000 cubic metres of gravel will be hauled up the highway to be used as a foundation under the asphalt. More work for construction trucking companies.

Asphalt mix will also have to be transported to the highway, and it’s estimated about 18,400 heavy truck loads will be hauled to the work site.
