SEVERE-DUTY FREIGHTLINERS

Freightliner offers two new Severe Duty (SD) truck models, providing a set-back axle position in both a 108- and 114-in. BBC configuration.

The expanded SD product line features options such as front frame extensions and radiator-mounted grilles for body attachment installations; front and rear engine power-take-offs; and body-specific chassis layouts that give vocational customers spec’ing flexibility.

The 108SD (pictured here)  features a 42-in. set-back axle with ratings from 10,000 to 20,000 lb for front axles, and single and tandem rears from 21,000 to 46,000 lb. Power comes from Cummins ISB or ISC engines rated from 200 to 350 hp and 520 to 1000 lb ft of torque.

The 114SD model features a set-forward axle (SFA) configuration with a standard 31-in. front axle position and optional 29.5-in. bridge-formula configuration, and a set-back axle (SBA) configuration with a standard 48-in. SBA setting for maximum maneuverability. Front-axle ratings on the 114SD are available up to 23,000 lb, and configurations for single axles are available up to 38,000 lb, tandems up to 58,000 lb, and tridems rated to 69,000 lb.

All 114SD models are powered by the Detroit Diesel DD13 with a power range of 350 to 450 hp and torque ratings from 1250 to 1650 lb ft. The optional lightweight Cummins ISC and ISL engines will also be available, rated from 260 to 380 hp, and 660 to 1300 lb ft of torque. A full offering of Eaton manual and automated transmissions along with Allison automatics are offered.

The SD family is designed for heavy applications such as dumps, cranes, roll-offs, and mixers. Its corrosion-resistant aluminum cab is reinforced with steel and assembled with ‘Henrob’ rivets and welds, producing a cab that meets stringent A-pillar impact, roll-over, and back-wall impact tests, says Freightliner. The SD also sports a broad offering of single- and double-channel frame rails.

The SD product line can accommodate many specialized applications, says Freightliner, from sewer vacs to snow plows and refuse vehicles. And for this market, the Cummins ISLG natural gas engine will be offered in the 114SD SBA as a factory-built option.

A variety of fuel and DEF tank configurations combined with under-cab aftertreatment systems and battery boxes provide the optimum flexibility to specify clear frame rail and clean back of cab configurations, the company says.

The SD family also incorporates SmartPlex, a multiplex electrical system that simplifies chassis-to-body electrical integration. It provides a large number of switches and lamps that are configurable with simple snap-in legends, and additional computer power with more inputs and outputs for control. SmartPlex also offers body builders access to uploadable programming from a library of parameters via  Freightliner ServiceLink software.

The 114SD SFA begins production in this quarter, while the 108SD and 114SD SBA will launch closer to the end of this year.
