Smartbrake available on GM trucks
DETROIT, Mich. — Smartbrake’s engine retardation brakes are now available as a spec on new GM diesel-powered trucks.
The company claims its engine retardation brake is a non-fading endurance brake system that can be applied to Class 3 through 8 trucks. It has more than one million units in place throughout the world.
Unlike fixed orifice exhaust brakes, which use a butterfly design, Smartbrake’s products feature a sliding gate design that always returns to an open position and remains outside of the exhaust flow. The result, the company says, is that it doesn’t create backpressure on the engine whereas butterfly-type devices can stick in the closed position and reduce the exhaust pipe opening by about 23 per cent.
