From Hendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems, the “innovative” Steertek NXT axle is said to be the next generation of its weight-saving fabricated front steer axle. It’s now the standard axle offering on International ProStar+, TranStar, and LoneStar models.

Hendrickson says it includes what it calls “continuous beam architecture” which is said to minimize stress points for added durability while providing a superior strength-to-weight ratio. The rigid, box-shaped cross section of the axle resists horizontal, vertical and twisting forces more effectively, the company says, than traditional I-beams. It’s designed to manage the increased brake torque resulting from the recently updated FMVSS-121 stopping-distance regulations. It’s compatible with both drum and disc brakes with either 5/8- or ¾-in. fasteners.

The design and manufacturing process is said to save up to 23 lb on the NXT compared to traditional I-beam axles while combining rigid strength, maneuverability, and reduced maintenance. It can be combined with Hendrickson’s ‘monoleaf’ spring technology to form the Softek lightweight front suspension system. The combination saves up to 85 lb of weight savings. The new axle can also be paired with Hendrickson two-leaf spring designs.

The patented two-piece knuckle assembly simplifies kingpin-bushing serviceability and includes a new double-lip seal to further improve bushing life, says Hendrickson. Integrated steering-arm and tie-rod attachments increase strength and further reduce weight, the company adds, providing greater durability.

The NXT also features a new integrated clamp group and axle seat, a key design feature that allows for efficient system integration of various ‘next generation’ front suspension systems, as well as improved ground clearance and a reduced parts count.

The Steertek NXT comes with a 10-year, one-million-mile limited warranty.
