Summer’s Over

From Don’s Desk:

I know that summer is not really “officially” over, but the first week after Labour Day certainly makes me feel like it is. So, it’s time to get serious! You probably noted that we didn’t get an eXpress out last month. With vacations and the usual summer slowdowns, it seemed a good time for a break, but that just means there’s a whole lot more to tell you about this month.

First off, we hired a new staff member to help Eddy with the technical programs and related technical activities. Jeremy Harrower joins us with 12 years technical support activity at SAF Holland. Jeremy is also bilingual, filling a much-needed role in the office in support of our Quebec and other French speaking members. We hope that this will also allow us significant growth in Quebec where I have always felt there was opportunity, but we needed that all important language resource.

Secondly, I would like to touch on Ontario’s Vehicle Weight and Dimensions reform. With the implementation of SPIF Phase 4 in July we have received an almost steady stream of questions at the office in St Thomas. Eddy has also put on a number of workshops on the subject, including a few at the request of our members for sessions at their facilities, for their staff and customers. As an additional resource we have an article on our home page at www.ctea.ca , where you can download a copy of the provincial guide book and the regulation in PDF format. The article can be found on the right of the Home Page in the” Feature News” section. These documents are very important to have if you are manufacturing any vehicles for the Ontario market.

Thirdly, there have been a couple of important requests to get information out to the membership:

  • The Profession Engineers Ontario PEO) have asked that we pass on a letter to all our Ontario manufacturing members offering assistance with complying with changes to the Professional Engineers Act. These changes have repealed exemptions from licensing requirements for professional engineering work related to producing production equipment. You can download a PDF of the letter here Please read the letter and if you have any questions contact the PEO at the coordinates in the letter.
  • Industry Canada has a new program that may be of interest to our small and medium sized members. They are trying to make it easier for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)  to get the credit they need in their businesses. For more information download the French here or English here.

Finally, I want to remind everything that this year’s conference is October 26th to 24th at the Delta Beausejour in Moncton, New Brunswick. We now have the details, including the program up on the website. Just go to www.ctea.ca and click on Events on the header and you can download all your registration information.

As usual I would like to hear from any of you with comments on this newsletter or its content.

Have a great September!!
